Alton is the largest settlement within East Hampshire with around 21,000 residents. The council has a budget of around £1,200,000, has 13 Councillors and 15 employees and is responsible for over 74 hectares of public open space including informal amenity lands, conservation meadows, sports grounds, formal gardens and a centrally located pond. It owns and manages allotments, play areas, Christmas lights, floral displays, street furniture and a small portfolio of residential and commercial properties and community buildings. It undertakes a full public events programme throughout the year and is currently developing a climate change strategy as well as becoming increasingly involved in progressing a health and wellbeing programme for the Town.

Alton Town Council is looking to appoint a full time (37 hours per week) dynamic Countryside Ranger to work as part of a small team. The appointed person will be passionate about conservation and ecology and ensure that the Council is able to deliver a high-quality experience to residents and visitors when they walk around our informal and countryside open spaces. You will have ambition for growth, both professionally and personally in this role. The position is fully hands-on, working with the existing grounds team in conserving and improving our growing portfolio of countryside spaces and carrying out priorities identified within our management plans. You will also undertake some work with the Town Hall team in organising and executing public engagement activities and volunteering sessions focused on ecology and conservation within our sites.

This is an interesting and challenging post, for which you should possess strong interpersonal skills, with a proven track record in working as a Ranger or in a similar role.
