This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside an experienced, innovative and forward-thinking Grounds team at Brunel University London. The team is responsible for the delivery of grounds maintenance, campus biodiversity and delivery of our outdoor sports facilities/pitches across nearly 80 hectares.

Reporting to the Grounds Team Leader, you will help meet service delivery and performance standards on campus. You should be adaptable, prioritising work and multitasking where needed and work well with a wide range of stakeholders. In addition, you will be solution focused, with good interpersonal and communication skills.

The successful candidate should have proven work experience in a similar role and the ability to use a range of equipment associated with sports and grounds maintenance, including the correct use of garden equipment and machinery. It is essential that you have a working knowledge of Health and Safety and COSHH requirements, as well as excellent organisational skills and attention to detail. Although not essential, a chemical spraying certificate and experience in the Green Flag award process would be desirable.

The role is full-time, primarily Monday to Friday, although some flexibility in working hours and weekend working may be required. A full driving licence is also required for this role.

Essential requirements:

  • Proven relevant work experience in a similar role
  • Experience in using specialist horticultural equipment
  • Grounds maintenance; planting, pruning, weeding, strimming, mowing, litter picking
  • Use of PPE
  • Working as part of a team
  • An up-to-date comprehensive knowledge of horticulture and the ability to identify common plants, trees and weeds
  • Working knowledge of COSHH
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • The ability to use various equipment associated with sports and grounds maintenance, including the correct use of garden equipment and machinery
  • Work off ladders and towers
  • The ability to work as part of a team, working alongside and supporting other staff
  • The ability to present a customer focussed service and a positive attitude /response to all enquiries and requests
  • The ability to be adaptable, prioritising work and multitasking where needed
  • Full UK driving licence
  • A keen interest in gardens and landscapes
  • A desire to achieve high standards and the ability to work on own initiative
  • Flexibility and willingness to work overtime during high work loads
  • The ability to carry out the duties and able to work effectively outdoors all season

Desirable requirements:

  • Relevant NVQ or equivalent
  • Certificate of competence for ride on mowers
  • Certificate of competence for chemical spraying
  • Certificate of competence in pedestrian mowers and hand-held equipment
  • Experience in the Green Flag award process
  • Working knowledge of Sports pitch maintenance
