This is a much underused turf maintenance operation, which although being simple to perform can produce some very effective results. The types of implement which can be used include a besom broom, dragbrush or long cane called a switch, although this latter implement is not really brushing, but can be used for items 2 and 5 below, and to a small degree item 4.
There are a number of reasons why it is good practice to undertake brushing on turf areas:
- It lifts the grass upright prior to mowing, enabling a more even cut to be produced.
- Dew or surface moisture can be removed.
- Surface aeration amongst the grass blades can be carried out, reducing the potential for disease attack.
- To help incorporate top-dressings more easily.
- To disperse grass cuttings or worm casts.
- To remove surface debris and fallen tree leaves.
