This is a much underused turf maintenance operation, which although being simple to perform can produce some very effective results. The types of implement which can be used include a besom broom, dragbrush or long cane called a switch, although this latter implement is not really brushing, but can be used for items 2 and 5 below, and to a small degree item 4.

There are a number of reasons why it is good practice to undertake brushing on turf areas:

  1. It lifts the grass upright prior to mowing, enabling a more even cut to be produced.
  2. Dew or surface moisture can be removed.
  3. Surface aeration amongst the grass blades can be carried out, reducing the potential for disease attack.
  4. To help incorporate top-dressings more easily.
  5. To disperse grass cuttings or worm casts.
  6. To remove surface debris and fallen tree leaves.
