The following information provides a quick reference to assess the state of a sports pitch or similar turf area. The regular assessment of these areas will allow for better informed decisions to be made on the necessary maintenance and renovation work required.
It is best to take a number of readings for each performance criteria on a turf area. This will give a more realistic assessment of the prevailing situation . The Performance criteria can be assessed in a number of ways:
Criteria 1 & 3, can easily be measured with a steel ruler;
Criteria 2 & 4 are a quick visual estimate;
Criteria 5 - 8 can be simple soil testing equipment which give a general indication of the required criteria; alternatively they can be more accurate, but expensive, laboratory tests, which will still need to be interpreted in light of the other results obtained, especially information from a turf sward assessment.
