“Young people should consider a career in grounds management because it’s so rewarding - If you like being outdoors in all weather, always doing different tasks and seeing the end results of your work, then it definitely the career for you.”

Beth first got into grounds when she took an apprenticeship at Wellington School when she was 18. Now working as a fully-fledged part of the independent school’s grounds team, Beth’s role is hugely varied, covering grounds for rugby, football and cricket as well as maintaining the athletics track at the school. She also enjoys pitching in with the gardening team when needed.

With her favourite part of the job being the fulfilment of seeing students enjoying playing sport on the grounds she maintains, Beth joined the GMA’s NextGen to help make the industry more diverse and inclusive.

Beth scooped up the ‘Young Groundsperson of the Year’ award at the GMA’s Industry Awards in 2023 and wants to use her role on NextGen to promote the industry to more young people in schools and college, as well as to people with disabilities.
