“The job satisfaction of contributing a small piece to a bigger picture as well as being outdoors, keeping fit and working alongside professional sports clubs is immense. There are always surprises, and it can be challenging, but that’s what makes it so rewarding.”

Jack first got into grounds as an Assistant Grounds Person at Ashton Gate in 2017. Starting with little experience, over time Jack listened closely to colleagues and built up a foundation of practical knowledge, supported by qualifications, which all contributed to landing him the role as Deputy Head Grounds Person, now only 27 years old.

His current role focuses on creating the best possible playing surface for Bristol City, Bristol City Women FC and Bristol Bears. The tight schedule between games across multiple sports means that Jack and his team has to work had and always adapt to new challenges. Despite the challenges, they pride themselves on regularly producing pitches of the highest standard for professional sports.

Inspired by the satisfaction het gets from his job and the buzz he gets on Match Day, Jack wanted to join the GMA’s NextGen to be vocal around challenges facing the industry and to encourage young people of all backgrounds and experience to consider the world of career opportunities available in the grounds management industry.
